【細かい英語の違い】So と Such って何が違うの?~使い方~

そもそも、なぜsoとsuchはややこしいのか?

基本的にはSoとSuchはどちらも「強調」のニュアンスを出す時に使います。他にもveryやreallyなども使いますね。

細かい違いを見てみましょう。

1.「So」 形容詞、副詞を強調する so(名詞が無い時)

様々な例文を見て使い方を見てみましょう

例文:

  • She is so beautiful. = She is very beautiful.
  • She ran so quickly. = She ran very quickly.
  • It was so delicious. = It was really delicious.
  • I spoke English so well. = I spoke English very well.

「much」「many」「little」「few」などの量を表す単語の前に着けるパターンも「So」は持っています。この用法の場合においては、+名詞、もしくは名詞がなくても使うことが出来ます。

例文:

  • She ate so much.
  • She ate so much cake.
  • I had so many.
  • I had so many CDs.

2.「Such」名詞、形容詞+名詞を修飾する such(a, an はsuchの後に置く)

Soやvery とは違うsuchの使い方を例文を通して見てみましょう。

文の構造が「so」とどう違うのかを見て、自分自身で法則を理解しよう。

例文:

  • He was such a beautiful man. = He was a very beautiful man.
  • ダメだよ!: He was a so beautiful man.
  • ダメだよ!: He was a such beautiful man.
  • She got such a good time at the party. = She got such a good time at the party.
  • It was such delicious food. = It was really delicious food.
  • I spoke such good English. = I spoke really good English.

3.「Such」+名詞のパターン

例文:

  • She is such a genius! = She is a real genius. = She is very clever.
  • I am such a teacher! = I act in a typical way for a teacher.

「a lot」「a lot of」の前に使う「Such」の場合でもかならず「a」の前に置きます。

例文:

  • She has such a lot of books.
  • I had such a lot of cake.

4.「So」と「Such」の共通点

「this」「those」「your」「his」「my」などの代名詞の後には、「So」と「Such」は使えません。基本的にはこのふたつは動詞の後に直接置く、という使い方をします。

例文:

  • ダメだよ!:This so beautiful town~
  • ダメだよ!:Your so helpful friend~

5.ある特定の結果を示す、「So~that」「Such~that」

「very」と「really」では使えない、「So」と「Such」のみの用法です。これらの用法においては、「that」は省略可能です。

例文:

  • It was so cold that the lake froze. = Because it was very cold the lake froze.
  • It was such a fine day that I could go fishing at the lake. = Because it was a very fine day I could go fishing at the lake.

6.「程度」を表す「So」と「Such」

「とても」とか「そんなに」など程度を表す時にも、「so」と「such」を使うことが出来ます。

例文:

  • The student is not usually so late. = The student is not usually as late as this.
  • She does not drink such a lot of green tea. = I don’t often drink as much green tea as this.

7.その他の熟語的な「So」と「Such」

「Such」+ 名詞:ある特定の種類

  • I have never heard such music before. = I have never heard this kind of music before.

No「Such」+ 名詞:名詞が存在しないことを表す

  • Nessie? There’s no such thing!

As 「such」:普通の、言葉通りの(否定分でよく使われる)

  • I am not going to have lunch as such, but there will be plenty of cake. = We are not going to have a normal lunch, but ~
  1. 「Such」as:例えば=For example or For instance
  2. And 「such」:and so on、などなど
  3. 「So」:すでに述べたことを繰り返す
    1. I hope so.
  4. Or 「so」: approximately、約
